Functions:

The South Sudan Land Commission performs the following functions and duties:

  • Develop land laws and policies;
  • Conduct research on land matters;
  • Arbitrate on land disputes; and
  • Advise various levels of government on land issues.

Structure:

The South Sudan Land Commission is headed by the Chairperson supported by the following commissioners:

  • Hon Wilson Kiri
  • Hon Deng Gau
  • Hon Benjamin Akol

The Commission is composed of the following administrative units:

  • Executive Director
  • Finance & Administration
  • Coordination
  • Conflict Resolution

  • Land Policy development

Important Information

Process of land acquisition in the Republic of South Sudan

  1. By applying to the state Ministry of Infrastructure.
  2. Filling a land acquisition form either for residential or Bussiness
  3. Government may negotiate land from a community to gazette for allotment
  4. Government may zone an area for investment or residential.

Where and how to get land title deeds

  1. Through the department of lands, state Ministry of Infrastructure.
  2. Title deeds are issued by persons who have been allotted plots by the land department, issued by land registry and approved by survey department in the state.

Land arbitration process

It is recognized by the Land Act 2009 as an alternative dispute resolution
There are committees under payams to handle land arbitration.
Where to report cases of land grabbing and other conflicts.

  1. Can be reported to court or
  2. The land committee (Case of Juba) formed under the Office of the Land Commission.

Land Policy has been passed by the Council of Ministers, and it is before the National Legislative Assembly awaiting to be passed.
