Presidency of the Republic of South Sudan

The President of the Republic of South Sudan is the head of the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan Peoples' Liberation Army (SPLA). He represents the will of the people and exercises the powers invested in the office of the President of the Republic of South Sudan by the the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan.

The President of the Republic of South Sudan:

  • Preserves the security of South Sudan and protects its territorial integrity;
  • Supervises constitutional executive institutions and provides exemplary leadership in public affairs in the Republic of South Sudan;
  • Appoints holders of constitutional and judicial posts in accordance with the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan and other laws;
  • Presides over the South Sudan Council of Ministers;
  • Initiates constitutional amendments and legislation and assents to bills passed by the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly by signing such bills into law;
  • Summons, adjourns and/or prorogues the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly in consultation with the Speaker of the Assembly;
  • Confirms death sentences, grants pardons, and remits convictions or penalties according to the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan and the laws of the Republic of South Sudan;
  • Appoints his advisors;
  • Appoints ad hoc committees and commissions;
  • Confers honours;
  • Generally represents the Government and people of the Republic of South Sudan;
  • Creates, reorganizes and disbands ministries, commissions and other administrative units of the Government of South Sudan and assigns their functions and duties;
  • Appoints ministers, chairpersons of commissions, and heads of other administrative units together with their senior-most public servants;
  • Oversees the administration of the decentralized system of government in the Republic of South Sudan; and
  • Performs any other function as may be prescribed by the law.
